Supers 9 Reds 4
Posted July 6, 2011
The Supers travelled to Swan River on Wednesday, July 6th to complete their regular season schedule against the Swan River Reds. At 9 wins and 3 losses coming into the season, Canora was shooting for double digits in wins in the SESBL, and they accomplished the task with a 9-4 victory.
Although the final result was not close, the game itself was a lot more competitive than the score indicated, as the Supers were able to get out of a few jams which otherwise would have made the game much tighter. Darcy Blommaert started on the mound for the Supers, and only gave up 1 hit in 5 innings. However, control was an issue as he dealt 8 walks while giving up 2 earned runs to pick up the win. He struck out 5 Reds hitters, and was able to pitch out of trouble to limit the damage. He improved his record to 2 and 2 on the season. Carson Dennis pitched the final 2 innings, allowing no hits but also had trouble finding the strike zone with 4 walks. It was Dennis' first pitching appearance of the year and he was able to record 3 strikeouts while giving up just one run.
Offensively, the Supers had a fairly lackluster day as they were only able to produce 5 hits off of Reds starting pitcher Nick Schneider. Center fielder Clayton Malanowich was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, an rbi and a pair of stolen bases to lead the way. Carson Dennis had an rbi double plus a run scored in the top of the 5th to put the game out of reach, while Adam Chernoff had an rbi single and a stolen base. Shortstop Trevor Latham had abase hit and 2 runs scored, Dylan Toffan drew a pair of walks and scored 2 runs, while Darcy Blommaert also drew a pair of walks with one run scored.
With the win, the Supers complete their regular season with 10 wins and 3 losses, good enough for 2nd place in the Southeast Senior Baseball League standings. They will now have a first round bye in the playoffs, and will await their second round opponent. Once the first round of playoffs is completed, the first place Yorkton Junior Cardinals will pick their opponent for round 2, and the Supers will play the remaining team in a best of 3 series. Game 1 will be played in Canora, and game 3 will be played in Canora if necessary. Should the Supers reach the league finals, it will be a best of 5 series, with the higher seed getting home field advantage. Once the Supers opponent is determined, it will be posted on the Supers website www.ballcharts.com/canorasupers, the SESBL site www.ballcharts.com/SESBL, GX94 radio and 94.1 The Fox FM. The first round should be completed within the next 10 days approximately.
