Northeast Regional Tournament Review
Posted July 27, 2011
The Northeast Regional Tournament offered nothing less than a prominent display of some of the best women’s basketball in this part of the country. The Detroit Blackhawks squared off with the Cleveland Crush in a “down to the wire” quarterfinal meet. Four Blackhawks scored in double figures (Monique George 10 points; Brittany Dorsey 12 points; Randall Hurst 15 points and Kanisha Ward 13 points) while the Crush’s Christian Estrict put up a game high of 25 points. Veronica Carmen and Shana Andrus chipped in 13 points and 17 points respectively for Cleveland. However, it was not enough to overcome Detroit’s firepower and come away with the victory. The Blackhawks prevailed, 78 to Cleveland’s 73.
The Flint Monarchs routed the Columbus Hidden Gems, with a
final score of 86 to 59. With quite a
few key players injured and absent, the Gem’s gave a full hearted effort by
Simone Jelks scoring a game high of 20 points and Catherine Cain and Jancia
Anderson scoring 14 points and 13 points respectively. Flint defended their undefeated home record
with superior passing, shooting and controlling the boards. The tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Nan
Moore contributed 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Kaihla Szunko chipped in 17 points and 7
boards while Latisha Luckett added 12 points and 4 assists. Point guard Jasmine McCall was shy of a double-double
with 9 points and 9 rebounds.
The Monarchs had full control of the championship game from
the beginning. Outstanding three-point
shooting from Nan Moore (19 points-five 3 pointers) and Sharonda Hurd (19
points) set the tone that led Flint to victory. Once again, Kaihla Szunko scored 17 points and 7 rebounds while
Jasmine McCall fought for a double-double once again with 13 points, 9 assists
and 5 rebounds. Detroit’s Joei Clyburn
led all scorers with 27 points and Randall Hurst tailed with 16 points.
Congratulations to the Flint Lady Monarchs, the 2011
Northeast Regional Champions! Good Luck
in Atlanta!
