Flint Monarchs fall to Louisiana Bayou Angels in opening round of WBCBL National Tournament

Unfortunately the Louisiana Bayou Angels spoiled their aspirations.
Flint fell to Louisiana 78-70 in the opening round of the WBCBL national tournament at Oglethorpe University in “Hotlanta” this past Saturday.
The Rock County Robins would eventually win their second consecutive title on Sunday after defeating the Orlando Extreme 85-73.
Latisha Luckett and Nan Moore, a native of Atlanta, both tied for a team-high 18 points for the Monarchs.
Luckett also dished out five assists while Moore grabbed seven rebounds and handed out four dimes.
Several of Moore’s relatives — who still live in the Atlanta — as well as other Monarchs fans helped pack the stands to cheer on their favorite semi-pro women’s hoops team but the Monarchs obviously weren’t pleased with the turnout of the contest.
“When we lost it was kind of shocking,” said Moore. “I was amped up to win and that was my purpose. I wasn’t amped up to show people anything else because my family knows I can play and I was more amped up about winning and wanting to be successful as a team.”
“I just think we faced a really good team and we didn’t do all of the necessary things to win the game,” Monarchs head coach Deonta McChester said. “A lot of things played a factor but it was a good game and they had some really talented girls. We was prepared but we let a lot of other factors influence us.”
Natasha Morris chipped in all 12 of her buckets in the second half for Flint despite getting stitches in her chin following a nasty fall early in the game.
Tamarah Riley tallied 8 points and six boards while Kaihla Szunko added four points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
The Monarchs (13-3) entered the dual as the No. 2 ranked team. Louisiana was rated No. 3.
The Bayou Angels led by as many as 15 points in the battle.
“This team never gave up and they fought to the end and competed to the end but things just wasn’t on our side that day,” said McChester. “I think the Monarchs had a great season and we’re headed in the right direction.
“We were disappointed to not win the WBCBL national championship but we know the Monarchs will return to battle for a title next season,” Monarchs president and general manager Dreyon Wynn said in a press release. “These women and coaching staff should be commended for their efforts and performance on this season. I can guarantee you will see a much wiser and stronger team in 2012.”
