On Tuesday, September 13, the Lady Wildcats took their 8-0 record on the road to White Bluff facing William James. Waverly won the first meeting in two sets but had prepared for this to be a tougher outing. In the first set after completing the first round of rotations, the Lady Wildcats were out front, 16-15. After a back-and-forth struggle, the Lady Colonels took the first set 25-23. This was only the second time during the 2011 season that the Lady Wildcats had lost the first set of the match. They seemed determined to not suffer their first loss of the regular season.
In the second set, again after completing the first round of rotations, the Lady Wildcats were out in front with a 1-point lead, 12-11. Waverly came out on top, 25-21. The match then went to the third and deciding set.
The Lady Wildcats won the coin toss and elected to serve first. The ball was given over to the Lady Colonels by a serving error. William James then took an early 3-0 lead. In their first three turns at serve, Waverly could not put together any runs and fell behind 9-3. Then, with Abbie Landiss serving, the Lady Wildcats came up with a 4-point run to get things close again making it 7-9. The next three rallies went back and forth and after the first complete round of rotations, Waverly was behind 8-11. During the next rally, Chloe Fussell was able to put down a kill for the Lady Wildcats. Keyle Holland then rotated to serve for Waverly. Holland served 2 aces aiding the Lady Wildcats at tying the score at 11-11. Waverly took the next rally and was ahead 12-11. The serve then went back to the Lady Colonels on a called lift by the Lady Wildcats and the score was once again tied. This time 12-12. Fussell was able to make a play at the net, punching the ball over and finding a hole on the Lady Colonels’ side of the court. Waverly was in the lead 13-12. Fussell then served an ace at her turn at serve putting the Lady Wildcats in an opportunity for match point. A serving error gave the ball back to the Lady Colonels. The score was still in favor of Waverly, 14-13. The Lady Wildcats returned the serve from William James, but the Lady Colonels failed at getting the ball back over the net and the Lady Wildcats won the set 15-13, taking the match win and keeping their undefeated record intact.
The Lady Wildcats faced East Hickman on Thursday, September 15 and added another conference win bringing their record to 10-0.
The B-Team for Waverly went .500 for the week. They suffered a loss at William James in two sets, 25-11 and 25-14. But, the young Lady Wildcats turned things around against East Hickman and took the victory, 18-25, 25-11, and 15-4. The B-Team’s current record is 6-4.
The Lady Wildcats played their last home match of the 2011 season on Monday, September 19, hosting Lewis County. They traveled to Charlotte to play their last regular season match. Waverly will be playing in the MTAC Conference Tournament on Saturday, September 24.
