LADY WILDCATS ARE 2011 TMSAA SECTIONAL CHAMPS!!!!
Amazing is all one can say about the 2011 volleyball season for the WJHS Lady Wildcats. Waverly finished the regular season with an impressive 11-1 record. This put the Lady Wildcats as the #1 seed and a first-round bye going into the MTAC Tournament. Waverly’s first opponent was the Fairview Lady Falcons, who had defeated Hickman County. Waverly won both sets against Fairview, 25-12 and 25-18, to advance to the championship match.
The Lady Wildcats faced the #2 seed Charlotte Lady Tigers in the finals. The first two sets were split, with Waverly taking the first set, 25-23, and Charlotte won the second set, 25-22. The first two sets remained close as there was never more than a 4-point difference in score. The third and deciding set proved to be the same as both teams were battling hard for the victory. The Lady Wildcats prevailed in the third set with the final score of 15-12. The Lady Wildcats were MTAC Tournament Champions!
Waverly’s B-Team also played in the championship match. They were seeded #3 and defeated #7 East Hickman in two sets, 25-11 and 25-7. Waverly then faced #2 seed Hickman County and again was successful in two sets, 26-24 and 25-17. In the finals, Waverly’s B-Team also faced the Charlotte Lady Tigers, but were not successful. Scores were 14-25 and 15-25.
On Saturday, October 1, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Spring Hill to participate in the TMSAA Sectional Tournament. The field of participating teams included Harpeth, South Lawrence, E.A. Cox, Summertown, Spring Hill, and Charlotte. The Lady Wildcats were again seeded #1 and had a first-round bye. Waverly’s first opponent was South Lawrence. The Lady Wildcats defeated South Lawrence in two sets with scores of 25-15 and 25-15. Waverly then met up with Charlotte in the finals of the winner’s bracket. Charlotte was successful in this meeting, winning in two sets with scores of 25-17 and 25-19. This dropped Waverly into the loser’s bracket.
After losing to Charlotte, there seemed to be a lot of determination in the Lady Wildcats. Harpeth was the next opponent for Waverly. The Lady Wildcats took the win in two sets with scores of 25-20 and 25-11. The match with Harpeth was the finals of the loser’s bracket and led to another meeting with Charlotte for the Lady Wildcats. Waverly had to win twice against the Lady Tigers in order to claim 1st place, but Charlotte only needed one victory. Charlotte was 1 point away from taking the first set of the match with the score 24-19, but the Lady Wildcats showed their determination and put together a 7-point run to take the first set 26-24. The Lady Wildcats also won the second set of the match, 25-22. This put both teams with one loss in the tournament and another match had to be played to determine the tournament winner. In both sets in the final match, the Lady Wildcats fell behind but fought back to take the win. Scores for the last two sets of the finals were 25-18 and 25-21. The Lady Wildcats were awarded 1st place in the TMSAA Sectional Tournament. Selected to the All-tournament team from Waverly were Keyle Holland, Jordan Wertz, and Lofton Etheridge. The Lady Wildcats finished their 2011 season with an overall record of 21-3. Congratulations Lady Wildcats!!
