ST. LOUIS SURGE ELECTRIFIES COMMUNITY AT MAY DAY PARADE

The sun shined brightly May 20 as floats and bands took the streets headed east along Market Street between Jefferson and Broadway in downtown St. Louis, during the 124th Annual Annie Malone May Day Parade.

Surge, players, staff, volunteers, coaches and members of the Surge Kids Club walked in the parade. Walking in the “special guest” section with KMJM Majic 104.9 and Hallelujah 1600, the Surge distributed more than 4000 flyers and team schedules.

Throughout the street people were cheering while bands played and marched to the sound of their music, dance teams danced as various businesses gave out promotional items. However, with all the sounds, there was one distinct sound; Majic 104.9 blasting music and promoting the St. Louis Surge’s second home basketball game of the season, which is scheduled for June 2 against the Chicago Lady Steam at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

“This is what the Surge is all about,” said St. Louis Surge Owner and General Manager, Khalia Collier. “The Surge wants to give hope and excitement to girls and boys all over Missouri by participating in various community events, showing that women’s sports are still alive. Walking in the parade was a key component of reaching kids and families in the St. Louis community.”

The mission of the Annie Malone May Day Parade is “to improve the quality of life for children, families, elderly and the community by providing social services, educational programs, advocacy and entrepreneurship.” Since its early years, the parade has been a major event for St. Louis’ African-American community, which encompasses a distinguished part of African-American heritage.
