Supers Squeak by Langenburg 8-7

Posted July 2, 2012

On a hot and humid Monday night in Canora, the Supers welcomed the Langenburg Indians in a game with playoff seeding up for grabs. Coming into the game the Supers sported a record of 5 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie, while Langenburg had 5 wins and 7 losses. A Supers win would keep them ahead of the Indians in the standings, while an Indians win would have made the race for third place a lot tighter.

Things were looking great early on for the Supers, as they stormed out to a 6-2 lead after four innings, with the game seemingly under control. However, with two out in the top of the fifth inning, the wheels came apart for the Supers as the Indians tied the game up with just one hit, one walk, and 3 costly errors. Langenburg's first two runs of the game were also a result of miscues in the field. Langenburg took the lead in the top of the sixth inning with three hits and one run. With bases loaded and two outs, starting pitcher Travis Fogg was able to get an inning ending popout to limit the damage. The Supers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and were able to push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Kody Rock hit an rbi single to seal the win.

Kody Rock, Greg Andreychuk, and Derek Palagian each had multi-hit games for the Supers to lead the attack. Rock was 2 for 5 with a stolen base, a run scored,  and the game winning rbi. Andreychuk was 3 for 3 with a double, 2 rbi's, 2 walks, 3 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases. Palagian was 2 for 4 with a double, 2 rbi's and a stolen base.

Also contributing to the Supers offence was Evan Rostotski with a double and a run scored, Myk Rostotski with a single, a walk, a run scored and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 7th. Trevor Latham had 2 walks and a run scored, while Ryan Kitchen had a single and a sac fly.

Travis Fogg went the distance on the mound, but had little help from his defence as the Supers committed six errors. Fogg gave up 7 runs in 7 innings, but only 1 was earned. He only had one walk and had 5 strikeouts while picking up the win.

With the win, the Supers record improves to 6 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie, and are guaranteed to finish ahead of at least Langenburg and Swan River in the standings. Once playoffs start they will not have to play in the 6 vs 7 Survivor Series playoff game. The Supers play again on Tuesday, July 3 in Melville against the Bison. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM at Pirie Field.
