Supers Lose Pitchers Duel to Junior Cardinals

Posted July 4, 2012

On Wednesday July 4, the Supers played their regular season finale as they hosted the Yorkton Junior Cardinals. The Cardinals were a little late in arriving, but the game eventually started, and it breezed by quickly as both teams were unable to produce much offence. At the end of the day, the Cardinals were able to get 6 hits, while the Supers could only get 3 hits as the Cardinals won 2-1.

Fielding was once again an issue for the Supers, as 3 errors in the top of the first inning produced one run for Yorkton. From that point until the bottom of the fifth, the game breezed by with zero runs, until catcher Travis Fogg launched a tape measure home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 1. In the top of the 7th, a few well placed hits were enough for the Juniors to take the lead, and they held for the win.

Derek Palagian started on the mound for the Supers, and had his best game of the year. His curve ball was working, and he was able to spot his fastball most of the night to keep the Cardinal batters in check. However, like many other times this season, the team could not generate enough offence to help him out. Unfortunatley Palagian took the loss on this night, despite only giving up two walks with six strikeouts.

Fogg had a stellar night at the dish, going 2 for 2 with a home run, a single, a stolen base, and a walk. Trevor Latham was the only other Super to solve Cardinal pitcher Colby Parachoniak with a single. The Supers had a glorious chance to get some runs in the top of the third inning as the first two runners reached base. However, the inning came to an abrupt end after a pickoff and when a Super runner was caught stealing.

Had the Supers won, they would have guaranteed themselves third place in the Southeast Senior Baseball League. However with the loss, their record falls to 7 wins, 6 losses and a tie. The Supers regular season has now come to an end, and they will have to wait until the other teams in the league finish their games to determine where they place in the final standings. Once the final standings materialize, playoffs will begin likely next week. Stay tuned for more information in the coming days
