Series Goes Distance: Supers Pull Through

Posted July 19, 2012

After winning the first game of the best of three series 6-2 over the Junior Cardinals in Canora on Tuesday evening, the Supers travelled to Yorkton on Wednesday evening to try to complete the sweep. Game two was scheduled for 6:15, and game three was to be played immediately after if necessary. A lack of clutch hitting, some quality Cardinal pitching, and a few costly fielding miscues were the Supers downfall as the Cardinals won game two 3-2. With the Cardinals victory, game three was played immediately after under the lights. Unfortunately for the Junior Cards, the Supers brought the heavy lumber, pounding out 15 hits while taking advantage of 6 Yorkton errors in an 11-2 victory. The Supers won the best of three series two games to one.

Game 2: Yorkton Jr Cardinals 3 - Canora Supers 2

In this game, hits were few and far between, as each teams pitching stole the show. Derek Palagian started on the mound for the Supers, allowing just three hits and three runs with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, all three runs were unearned as the Cardinals were able to take advantage of a couple fielding miscues.

The bats were stone cold in this game, as Cardinals pitchers Colby Parachoniak and Matt Leschyshyn held the Supers to just two runs off four hits while striking out a combined ten batters. Ryan Kitchen, Clayton Malanowich, Zach Rakochy and Derek Palagian were the only ones able to record a hit. Kitchen also scored a run, while Travis Fogg scored the other. Carson Dennis and Malanowich each picked up an rbi to round out the offence.

Game 3 : Canora Supers 11 - Yorkton Junior Cardinals 2

The Supers offence finally woke up in the deciding game of the series, pounding out 15 hits while getting a superb pitching performance from Darcy Blommaert in an 11-2 trouncing of the Cardinals.

The Supers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first on four hits and three costly errors to take control of the game from the get go. Leading the way offensively for the Supers was Kody Rock and Zach Rakochy with three hits apiece. Rock also had two rbi's and two runs scored. Rakochy scored three runs, drew a walk, and drove in one. Derek Palagian, Trevor Latham, and Travis Fogg each had two hits. Fogg also had two rbi's, Latham scored two runs, and Palagian had an rbi. Ryan Kitchen had a single and two runs scored. Carson Dennis had a single, and Evan Rostotski had a 2 rbi single in the bottom of the first to break the game open.

Darcy Blommaert continued his strong pitching on the season as he picked up the series clinching win, going the complete game seven innings. He gave up seven hits, two runs (one earned), with two strikeouts and allowing just one walk. He was also very economical throwing just 69 pitches to keep the Cardinals in check.

With the victory, the Supers will now take on the Willowbrook Royals in a best of three semi final series. The games have not been scheduled as of yet, but the only thing that is certain is that Willowbrook gets home field advantage as they finished ahead in the regular season standings. Once the games have been determined, it will be posted on the site and on the league website, www.ballcharts.com/sesbl.
