BELLE PLAINE, Minn. – The River Valley League held its annual scheduling meeting on Monday night to finalize league games, the merger of two teams and a new playoff format.
Perhaps the most significant news of the day is the merger between Winthrop and Fairfax. The merger ends the Eagles’ 19-year run as a town ball club. Winthrop’s current roster will be grandfathered in, but all new players must reside within a 30-mile radius of Fairfax per MBA rules.
The League also adopted a new playoff format, forgoing the best-of-three division playoffs from last year and starting with an eight-team region. The four and five seeds from each division will meet for a play-in game on July 31 to determine the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, which begins on August 2. Dates of the region tourney are August 2, 4, 7, 9 and 10. The top three teams out of the region will make the State Tournament.
First round matchups:
West No. 4 vs. West No. 5 – winner will face Central No. 1
Central No. 4 vs. Central No. 5 – winner will face West No. 1
West No. 2 vs. Central No. 3
Central No. 2 vs. West No. 3
