ST. LOUIS SURGE ANNOUNCES 2013 HOME OPENER

The St. Louis Surge Women’s Semi-Professional Basketball Team will take on the Atlanta Tarheels in its 2013 Home Opener, sponsored by Ameren Missouri, on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 7:05 p.m. During half time, pioneers in women’s sports will be honored including: Kristin Folkl, Neil Ivy and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Honorees will receive the St. Louis Surge Power House Legend Award. The game will take place at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) Mark Twain Center located at One University Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63121. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door: adults $8, students (with current high school student I.D.) $5, free for children age 5 and under, and free for those in team uniforms. Season tickets are currently available for $49.99. “The St. Louis Surge organization is excited for another exciting season of women’s basketball,” said Khalia Collier, Owner and General Manager of the St. Louis Surge. “With such great athletes and stand-out players from overseas and from Division I colleges and universities, I know that we have a team that will take us all the way to the national championship for a second year. As our slogan says “We are everyone’s team” and will need everyone’s support for our 2013 season.”

 The Surge will host five regular-season games in St. Louis and will feature teams from across the Mid-West. In honor of Father’s Day and all the dad’s that support their daughters basketball involvement, the home game on June 9 is Father-Daughter Day. Following the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure on June 15, the Surge invites fans and race participants to “Paint It Pink” in support of breast cancer awareness. Also, the Surge recently confirmed they will host the 2013 Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) National Tournament during the first week of August.

 The St. Louis Surge 2013 squad features local high school favorites, McDonald’s All-Americans, Division I athletes and international professional players. The roster includes the following players: Bianca Beck (Southeast Missouri University), Jaleesa Butler (Georgetown University), Shanika Butler (University of Arkansas Little), Morgan Clark (Robert Morris University), Nicole Dames (Oklahoma Panhandle State University), Daria Frazier (Witcha State University), Tanisha Gilbert (Minnesota University), Gabriella Green (Lindenwood University), Jenna Higgins (Northern State University), Gillian Letsche (Iowa State University), KeShell Paul (Oklahoma Unversity), Kassidy Shuman (Quincy University), Ali Schwagmeyer (Quincy University) and Aneshia Starks (Culver Stockton College).

The team is led by a new coaching staff including head coach Melissa Young and assistant coaches Petra Jackson and Tony Condra.
