Camp Christ

FARMINGDALE, NY – Coach Angel Mangual was asked to be the Softball Director at the inaugural “Camp For Christ” at Farmingdale State College where many aspiring softball players from Long Island had the opportunity to spend three days working on their on-field skills in conjunction, and connect with their spiritual side. The camp, (which was attended free of charge to all in attendance as a result of one family’s generosity) certainly left a lasting impression on the girls and instructors alike.

As many parents will attest after speaking to their daughters, the lessons learned at “Camp For Christ” went beyond the softball diamond as the daily guest speakers shared many life experiences, which at times was extremely powerful and motivational. Former NJ Nets All-Star Jayson Williams, former NY Yankee Aaron Small, and Hofstra Head Softball Coach Bill Edwards were just a few of the speakers who have committed to live their life in a “pay it forward” mode and make a positive impact on our nation’s youth by sharing heartfelt stories and life lessons.

In addition to the inspirational speakers and daily mass, event organizers provided circus tents, professional sound systems and daily raffles that included prizes such as iPads, Yankees and Mets tickets, softball equipment and gift cards. Each camper also received a t-shirt, warm-up jacket, and titanium sport necklace. Terrific food from local restaurants was provided each day, as well as unlimited treats from ice cream trucks on site.

Daily activities included high level instruction from local softball stars (and former TLI players) volunteering their time such as Kristen Brown (North Carolina), Carly Thea (Pittsburgh), Michiko McGivney (Cornell), Allie Pisciotta (Stony Brook), Bria Green (Stony Brook), and Jordan Catalano (Adelphi).

Coach Angel’s recommendation to attend “Camp For Christ” will be lasting memory in our girls’ softball experience. Sincere thanks to the special family in the background who made it possible to attend this camp at no cost. And here’s a big Team Long Island 99 “tip of the hat” to Father Fitzgerald and all the volunteers, staff, and instructors for a unique and memorable three days.
