19-5A District Champions!!!

Please congratulate all the members of the Girls Cross Country Teams when you see them.  They ran tremendous races on Friday and succeeded in winning the District Championships for both the Varsity and JV teams for the 1st time since 2008.  These young ladies have worked extremely hard, and it really says a lot about the dedication these athletes have to each other and their team.

The varsity race was a very competitive race between defending District Champion Katy High School and Seven Lakes.  In the end Seven Lakes won by a score of 33 to 41.  Leading the charge for the Spartans was freshman sensation Lourdes Vivas who ran a new school record 18:25.25 and finished in third place overall.  Right on Lourdes’ heels was sophomore Kacie Jo Corbin who ran a personal best 18:31.69, which also would have broken the school record.  Coming in 7th overall was super senior Erica Brown running an 18:41.30 and hot on her heels came senior Allison Tracy, freshly returned from injury with an 18:43.50.  Finishing the scoring for the Spartans was freshman Laura Broman who ran a personal best 18:47.66.  Also running for the Spartans were senior Caitlin Nugent (14th place 19:15.05) and sophomore Sydney Gandy 17th place (19:40).  Both Caitlin and Sydney ran season bests.

On the JV side, Seven Lakes took home the hardware over Katy High School, finishing with 23 points to Katy’s 36.  Leading the charge were two freshman Julia Marotta and Tori Welkener who finished 1st and 2nd respectively.  Julia ran a 12:16 and Tori ran a 12:20. Freshman Sharon Xu continued to improve and ran a 12:37 to finish 5th while Sophomores Abigail Smith (7th place 12:41), Janae Simoneaux (8th place 12:43), and Ati Omilabu (10th place 12:59).  Rounding out the scoring was junior Lisa Hillary who finished 19th overall with a time of 13:20.65.

Next Saturday the girls Varsity team will run at Atascocita High School to participate in the Region III-5A Championship.  Last year the ladies finished 2nd behind Katy High School, and the girls are hungry to finally hoist the trophy.  Please join us next week at Atascocita High school for the 12:45 pm start of the race.
