Game Notes: In what marked the first game that these two rivals have played since last year's bronze game, it was expected that the Broncs would come out firing and they did. It was a back and forth affair with intense defense being played by the Indian Head squad (which decided to play a form of box and one on Alexa-which was not expected). The Rockets did an admirable job keeping up with the home team until Alexa got hurt coming across on some help side defense. The Bronc player went up for her lay-up and her knee hit Alexa in the stomach. Alexa had to be removed from the game and never returned. The result of the collision was a partially torn abdominal muscle for Alexa. This all occurred with about three minutes left in the first. Between Alexa's injury, Megan getting dinged up and Natasha getting into foul trouble, the Rockets tried to hold on, but when the Broncs got two quick baskets and took a 12 point lead, the decision was made to pull the plug on pushing the game from the Rocket viewpoint. With Alexa out, and Megan's and Natasha's minutes being cut in half, the game was turned over to the bench with Alyssa and Kacey exchanging time at the point guard position. With this situation, there were many times that the Rockets had only grade 10's and grade 9's on the floor with only one player (Alyssa or Kacey) having significant senior playing experience. The Broncs smelled blood in the water and went after these youngsters in the second and third quarters relentlessly-beating them 48-5 during the middle two frames. The last two minutes saw Katie, Christina, Lindsey (all in Grade 9), with Alyssa and Kaitlin (grade 10s) going up against the starting five from Indian Head and even though they were getting pushed around by these much more experienced players, they didn't back away and went after them. The fourth quarter saw the two benches go at it with the Rocket bench coming out on top 8-6! It should be noted that despite the challenging conditions, 10 of the 14 Rockets that dressed were able to get on the score sheet which showed how much time the bench got on the floor. Kudos go to Alyssa and Kacey for being positive leaders in less than ideal conditions. |
