Spartans 2nd at Seven Lakes Relays

Posted February 23, 2014

This week the Varsity Girls competed in their home track meet, the Seven Lakes Relays and finished as the meet runner up with 93 points behind meet Champion Cy-Springs who finished with 149 points.  12 teams competed in the meet which featured some of the top teams from across the Greater Houston Area.  What makes this finish remarkable is the fact that your Spartans were short 7 varsity athletes that did not compete for a variety of reasons.  Overall the meet was a great success and many young athletes got some great competition and ran some great times.

The team was led this week by the distance runners, where seniors Erica Brown, Caitlin Nugent and Allison Tracy provide a lot of leadership to the younger members of the team.  Erica led the way by capturing her second straight 5K race championship by breaking the meet record in a time of 18:36.84.  Erica broke her own meet record but what made it remarkable is that Erica actually had to stop during the race and restart after being passed by 3 runners.  Freshman Tori Welkener took the second spot and Senior Caitlin Nugent managed the clean sweep of the 5K.

Later in the James Morris Mile, Erica once again showed her fighting spirit running a 5:20.91 to finish second behind 2013 State Qualifier Debra Taylor of Elsik.  Allison Tracy ran a season best 5:35.94 to finish in 5th and Sophomore Kacie Corbin finished in 6th with a 5:40.65.

Elsewhere Sophomores Francesca Oyeleke and Sydney Gandy also had a great amount of success in their individual events.  Frannie jumped a season best 5’6” in the high jump to win the event while also taking 6th in the Triple Jump.  Sydney ran a 2:24.56 to finish 3rd in the 800 and also chipped in by finishing 6th in the 400.

Junior  Imani Bluiett had an outstanding day also, coming back from a disappointing meet at Bubba Fife to show that she is a tough runner poised for a breakout season.  Imani bettered her 100 meter time by over 2 seconds to finish 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.54. Imani also bettered her 300 meter hurdle time by 3 seconds and ran a 50.24

Senior Sierra Sensat threw a career best of 106’ 5” to take second in the discus, while freshmen Lacy Barnes, Dana Pollack and Brittany Cecil had breakout performances in their respective races.

For the week of February 24th to March 1st, we will have a quick turnaround as the JV will compete on WEDNESDAY at Katy with the varsity competing on Saturday at Humble.  Itineraries will be available Monday afternoon.
