REINHOLT LEADS THE ROUT IN REBELS HOME OPENER

A huge first inning for the short handed Rebels would pave the way for a 14-4 win infront of the home town Ryley crowd who were pumped up for another season of Rebels baseball. The 2014 Rebels' home opener will go down in the record books as a mercy win over the Camrose Roadrunners after five innings were played and as per PBL Rules, if a team is up after five by ten or more, the game shall be ended in a mercy. Dating back to 2013, it marks the third straight win for the Rebels scoring in double digits and the second time that the Rebels have mercied the Roadrunners (July 11 in Camrose was a 19-3 Rebels win) outscoring them by a total of 33-7.

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E LOB
Camrose Roadrunners 1 0 0 1 2 - - 4 7 2 7
Ryley Rebels 9 0 2 3 - - - 14 10 2 6

Win - Corey Epp (1-0)

Loss - Cody Siroka

The Rebels would start the game with only eight men and a two man outfield and the Roadrunners capitalized early. After a lead off hit by pitch was awarded to the Roadrunners, Josh Banack would find a gap in the sparcely covered outfield for a stand up RBI double to make it 1-0 Camrose.

Ryley Rebels newcomer C Chad Nelson would get the start behind the plate and in the lead off spot like a young Jason Kendall. Nelson would start the inning off with a walk before stealing second and third base with out. Siroka would issue walks to 3B Craig Koughan and CF/RF Kevin Reinholt to load the bases with only one out. 2B Tyler Helgland would hit into a fielder's choice as the Roadrunners first baseman elected to come home with the ball instead of conceeding the early run. The errant throw would allow the inning to continue to go on as back to back bases load walks to 1B Travis Bugge and LF Jimmy Robertson would move the Rebels into a 3-1 lead. P Corey Epp batting eighth would drive a ball into centre field to score two more runs on his single before Joey Auto would quickly give the Rebels two out. With runners at first and third, Siroka would once again have issues with the strike zone walking Nelson to load the bases and issuing his third bases loaded walk of the inning, this time to SS Brian Tavaroli. The Rebels would then string off back to back to back singles as Koughan would drive in two and Reinholt would add Rebels run number nine of the inning. In total the Rebels would score nine runs off of four hits but would capitalize on seven walks in the inning and send fourteen batters up to the plate, including the auto out.

To make matters worse for the Roadrunners, Epp would settle down in the second inning quickly as he would strike out the side to get the Rebels bats back to plate to pile on more runs.

The Rebels would add two more runs in the third inning on back to back RBI singles by Reinholt and Helgeland and another three runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the mercy win by sending eight hitters to the plate with Tavaroli scoring two more runs on his two out, two RBI single. A total of thirty two Rebel batters stepped up to the plate in the four innings they had offensively collecting nine walks and ten hits on their way to the 14-4 blow out.

OF Kevin Reinholt would finish the game 3 for 3 with a walk and three singles and three RBIs while C Chad Nelson would score three runs on three walks and SS Brian Tavaroli would collect his first three RBIs of 2014 in his 1 for 3 game. Eight of the nine Rebels would score at least one run with seven different Rebels being walked during the course of the game.

P Corey Epp would pitch very well for the Rebels once again as he would go five innings for the win striking out six and walking only one with only two of the four runs earned. The win takes Epp to 11-12 on his career with the Rebels and his two runs scored offensively has moved him to ninty seven runs scored on his career as he chases the century mark.

The Rebels will have to re-focus as they will not see game action this Thursday as the team has a bye in the seven team PBL schedule. The next game will be Tuesday May 20 in Leduc to take on the Milleteers who are surprisingly still winless in the early part of the season at 0-2. Game two next week will be the second, and last, game against the rival Bardo Athletics in 2014, this time in Ryley. The last time the two teams met the Rebels walked away with a 13-7 win to open the 2014 PBL Schedule. Both games are slated to start at 7:00pm.
