Matt Lewis has been a welcome addition to the St. Peter amateur baseball team.
The top pitcher for the Le Sueur Braves the last few years, Lewis has become the ace of the staff for the Saints.
Lewis (4-0, 0.39 ERA) threw a three-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts and one walk in eight innings to pick up the victory in the Saints' 10-0 River Valley West Division win on Sunday at Veterans Field.
With 39 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings this season, Lewis is averaging 10 strikeouts per start. He has walked 11.
St. Peter upped to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the RVL standings, while Arlington dropped to 1-3 and 1-2.
The Saints also have had a hot-hitting start to the season, averaging 10 hits per game and a .320 team batting average.
Jeff Menk (.333) and Jesse Munsterman (.455) both went 4-for-5 against the A's. Menk had an RBI and a run scored. Munsterman doubled and scored twice.
Jordan Wilmes (.500) batted 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored.
Seth Wenner (.375) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Getting a hit each, Billy Hanson went 1-for-5 with two runs, Lewis batted 1-3 with a double and an RBI and Shea Roehrkasse hit 1-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Jesse Anderson (1-0) has St. Peter's other victory on the mound this season with three scoreless innings in relief in the 9-4 win over the Mankato Mets.
St. Peter hosts Hampton at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 11 at Veterans Field and then goes to Arlington for a rematch at 7:30 Friday night and at New Ulm at 2 Sunday afternoon. The Saints return home Wednesday, June 18 to host Waterville at 7:30 p.m.
