St. Peter amateur baseball team came back from trailing twice to edge the Hampton Cardinals 5-4 in 11 innings on Tuesday night at Veterans Field.
Hampton jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on two walks, a sacrifice bunt, a ground out and a single.
St. Peter took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the fifth. Second baseman Ryan Wenner hit a one-out single to left. Shortstop Jesse Munsterman and designated hitter Cameron Victor walked to load the bases. Catcher Billy Hanson hit a two-RBI single to center that drove in Wenner and Munsterman. Then, center fielder Seth Wenner hit a broken-bat single to center to drive in Victor.
Hampton tied the score 3-3 in the sixth inning with a run on one hit and three walks.
The Cardinals took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on two hits and a sacrifice fly to right on a close play at the plate.
St. Peter evened the score at 4 in the eighth inning on a hit by right fielder Matt Lewis and consecutive walks to third baseman Jordan Wilmes, Ryan Wenner and left fielder CJ Siewert to drive in Lewis.
The Saints won it 5-4 in the bottom of the 11th inning. Hanson walked, Ryan Wenner reached on an error and first baseman Jeff Menk walked to load the bases. Right fielder Matt Lewis then drove in Hanson with a walk-off single.
Hanson led St. Peter at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a walk, run, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Lewis finished 2-for-5 with a walk, run and RBI.
Victor went 1-for-5 with a walk and a run.
Seth Wenner batted 1-for-6 with an RBI.
Ryan Wenner went 1-3, with a run and two walks.
St. Peter pitcher Kevin Sandborg picked up the victory in relief of starter Jeff Wenner.
Wenner pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs, four hits and five walks, while striking out two.
In his first appearance this season, Sandborg pitched five innings with one unearned run, two hits, two strikeouts and two walks.
St. Peter (6-2) travels to Arlington for a rematch at 7:30 p.m. Friday and New Ulm at 2 p.m. Sunday before returning home at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Waterville.
Then the Saints play in the Arlington/Gaylord High Life Invite June 20-22. St. Peter opens against Watertown at 6:45 p.m. June 20 at Arlington. The winner meets the winner of Bird Island and St. Francis at 8:15 p.m. June 21 at Arlington. The losers plays at 2:15 p.m. June 21 at Arlington.
