Local nine routs New Ulm 11-1

The St. Peter town team continued its impressive play within the division Tuesday night at Veterans Field, defeating River Valley League West rival New Ulm Kaiserhoff 11-1 in 8 innings.
The win improved the first place Saints to 9-2 in RVL play, which is good enough for a two-game lead over Gaylord with two games left in the regular season. St. Peter can clinch the No. 1 seed in Region 6C playoffs with another win or a Gaylord loss.
On Tuesday at Vets, Ty Kaus got the nod for the Saints and ran into some trouble right away in the first inning. Kaus beaned the first batter on the first pitch of the game. That runner eventually scored after a sacrifice bunt, single, walk and a sacrifice fly.
But that would be all the offense the Kaiserhoff would manage as Kaus shut them down the rest of the way. Kaus earned the complete game win with three hits allowed, including four strikeouts and three walks.
St. Peter scored two runs in the second inning, which proved to be enough for the win. Three more runs were added in the third, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth forcing the 10-run rule.
Rookie Jayme Munsterman led the Saints at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs. Veteran Ryan Wenner went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Billy Hanson batted 2-for-3 with three runs, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Seth Wenner and Kaus each hit 2-for-5; Wenner had three RBIs and Kaus had one RBI and a stolen base.
The Saints collected 16 hits on the night.
St. Peter (19-7 overall) hosts division rival Fairfax 7:30 p.m. Friday before travelling to Gaylord 6 p.m. Sunday for the regular season finale.
The Saints begin Region 6C playoffs Friday, Aug. 1 in St. Peter.
