Good Morning!
This past Friday and Saturday the Seven Lakes Girls Cross Country team went to the Woodlands to participate in the Nike South Invitational, located at Bear Branch Sports Complex. The weather was perfect for the meet, and the competition was very hot. The ladies performed quite well in these conditions, and with one regular season meet left on the schedule, the girls look poised to try and defend their 2013 19-5A District Championship.
The Nike Meet started on Friday, as the Spartans had 4 JV teams toe the line in wait for the starting gun. As the gun sounded, 126 girls surged as one onto the course. The race was very competitive with many great teams such as the Woodlands, Southlake Carroll, and Flower Mound Marcus having squads. The Spartans were led by Sophomore Fara Omlilabu who finished in 3rd place overall running a season best time of 13:34.3. Joining Fara in the top 25 was Sophomore Isabel Velasquez who finished in 23rd place with a time of 14:25. The Spartan team finished in 5th place with 124 points being narrowly beaten out by the Woodlands (120) and Oak Ridge (117).
On Saturday, The Varsity Spartans placed two teams in 5K races with one race going off at 8:30 and another going off at 10:00. In the 8:30 race, the Spartans ran against 6 of the top teams in the state and had a strong showing. Once again, Junior Captain Kacie Corbin led the charge for the Spartans, finishing in 24th place overall, running the challenging course in 19:37.2. Sophomore Tori Welkener as eclipsed with 20 minute mark for the first time in her High School Career by running a 19:48.5. Tori finished in 33rd position.
