Posted October 26, 2014

This past Friday, the Lady Spartan Cross Country team to compete in the District 19-6A Championship at Bear Creek Park. The ladies fought hard but were unable to overcome a strong Cinco Ranch squad finishing in second place 27 to 46.  Katy High School finished in 3rd place with 63 points.  The second place finish qualifies the Spartans for the Regional Championship for the 10th straight year, a tremendous accomplishment for Seven Lakes High School.  The ladies will race next Saturday, November 1st at 12:00 pm at Atascocita High School.

All seven runners for Seven Lakes finished in the top 20, and were led once again by Junior Captain Kacie Jo Corbin.  Kacie ran a season best 18:37 to finish in 5th place overall.  Kacie ran a very strong race for start to finish and looks poised to have a strong regional meet.  Finishing right behind Kacie was Sophomore Tori Welkener, who ran a personal best 18:38.  This was another strong showing for the sophomore who continues to get stronger and stronger as she runs.  Sophomore Laura Broman finished in 8th running a 8:42 to recapture the form she had in her freshman season.  Laura ran 5 seconds faster than she did last year on the same course.  Sophomore Sharon Xu ran her best time by far dropping her best time to an 18:51 to capture 12th place.  Sharon’s previous best time was over 20 minutes, so her finish was truly astounding.  Junior Sydney Gandy finished the scoring for the Spartans capturing 15th place with a personal best 19:06 time.  Right behind Sydney came Sophomore Julia Marotta who has shown remarkable improvement in her first full season of cross country.  Julia finished the course in 19:07.  Rounding out the meet for the Spartans was sophomore Camilla Broman who ran a huge personal best 19:13 to finish in 20th position.  The Spartans will take on a strong group of contenders at the Region III Championship, but the girls look up to the challenge.

On the JV side, the Spartans finished in the runner up spot again, as Katy High school won the meet with 22 points to edge the Spartans 48.  Finishing in third was Cinco Ranch with 75 points.  Leading the way for the Spartans was Freshman Minea Tokar who outsprinted Katy’s Christie Terhune to capture third place with a season best 12:33, Later that day Minea also swam in a varsity swim meet for Coach Beck’s Swim Team.  Junior Abby Smith continued to have a strong season finishing in 7th place with a 12:42 time.  Sophomore Fara Omilabu finished in 10th place running 12:52.  This is remarkable as Fara also is competing as a golfer. Junior Taylor Brenkus finished in 13th position with a season best 13:10 time.  Rounding out the scoring for the JV was Sophomore Sarah Turner whose 13:13 betters her previous best by almost a full minute.  Junior Mina Finnoeen finished in 25th place with a time of 13:40 while Sophomore Cathleen Zhang finished in 27th place with a time of 13:42.  Both Mina and Cathleen’s times were personal bests.

10 girls will advance to the Regional meet as Seniors Caitlin Causey and Cassie Twiggs will join the varsity team for the meet along with Junior Abby Smith.  We will have room on the bus for some young ladies to come with us to cheer on the girls to state.  Stay posted for details!
