Orioles Offense Struggles in Mercy Rule Game vs Garretson

The Orioles JV was trying to follow up from the Varsity’s good performance and the only way to do that was win. JD Kirchner (Eighth Grader) took the hill in attempts to win two straight for the JV team. Isaiah Mader the freshman from Garretson would start on the hill for them.

In the first inning, a fly out and two ground outs would make the first inning a piece of cake for the JV team. In the bottom of the first, two walks would lead to runners on the corners with Senior Matt Bruns up to bat. Bruns would battle but end up striking out to end the inning. In the top of the second, two singles and an error would lead to the first two runs of the game for Garretson.

With the score two to zero Garretson, Lennox would come to bat in the bottom of the second. Three walks and two strike outs would bring up Tyler Zebell and he would end up working the count and striking out. They had left a total of five men on base in two innings. In the top of the third, three singles and two errors would put four runs on the board for Garretson and make it 6 to 0. In the bottom of the third, a ground out and two strike outs ended the inning with no fight from Lennox. Into the top of the fourth, a hit by pitch and a walk would end up taking JD Kirchner out of the game and replacing him with Junior Tyler Johnson. Johnson gave up three walks and a single to score four more and make it ten to zero. Johnson got a ground out and a strike out to end the top of the fourth.

It was now do or die time. Being down ten runs, the JV team had to score one to keep the game alive. A fly out from Sophomore Matt Wolf would make out number one. Then Senior Derrick Van Ningen would hit a screaming line drive to third however it was caught. Senior Matt Bruns would step in and hit a slow rolling grounder to third. When the throw was delivered the call was safe and Bruns had earned a single and Lennox’s only hit. They now had their one runner that they needed to score. Cole Fetrel was close to getting the hit they needed as he hit a high fly ball to right but it was caught to end the game. Lennox JV had been mercy ruled ten to zero.

The Orioles ended up leaving six men on base and in a four inning game that is pretty good.  In the end, Matt Bruns was the man with the only hit. Thanks to him, there wasn’t a no hitter pitched.
