Bantam Royals Make Semi-Final in Tsawwassen Tournament
Posted May 18, 2015
The Ridge Meadows Bantam AA Royals played some of their best baseball of the season this past weekend, qualifying for the semi-finals of the 12-team Tsawwassen Grand Slam Victoria Day Weekend tournament, before falling to the Richmond Chuckers in the semi-finals.
The Royals started off the tournament on Thursday night with their only loss of the round robin, as they fell to the Vancouver Canadians, a team they had beaten less than a week earlier, by a score of 11-4. Walker Mackay hit a home run to centre field to lead the offence, and also started a 5-4-3 double play while playing third base.
On Saturday the team's bats came out on fire, as they won their first game of the day over Aldergrove by a score of 11-1. Darian Guemos and Nick Stroud combined to allow only one hit in the game. The hot bats continued later in the day, as the boys won their second game of the day by defeating Layritz 15-3. Josh Soresen hit a frozen-rope home run to help lead the way.
On Sunday the boys entered the final game of the round robin, knowing that a win would secure a spot in the semi-finals. The Royals put up double-digit runs for the third consecutive game, as they beat the Chilliwack Cougars 12-5 to advance to the semi-finals. Nick Stroud went 2-3 with 3 runs batted in.
In the semi-final on Monday, the Royals faced off against the Richmond Chuckers. The team continued their strong play but came out on the wrong end of a 9-6 score. Nick Baust had a double and a triple to lead the way offensively.
Overall, it was a great weekend for the Bantam Royals. They played inspired baseball and showed more determination and consistency than they have all season. The boys will look to continue their strong play as they return to league play with three games this week as the spring season nears an end.
