Victoria Day Richmond Tournament - - Victoria Black Eagles lose to Cloverdale 2-1 in extra innings

In the quarter finals, the Black Eagles would play the league-leading Cloverdale Spurs by virtue of the Spur's loss to Delta in pool play. For the Eagles, this was the game they were waiting for. However, the magic on the Eagle bats in the first two games was snuffed out by strong Cloverdale pitching. In fact, this game became a pitchers's duel backed up by some superb defensive displays. The Eagle's Trey Sjerven went toe to toe with the Spurs Marshall Luiz for over seven innings. And Trey kept on going. He threw 94 pitches in 8 1/3 innings, allowing only four hits!
For the spectators on both sides, it was nerve wracking. The Spurs got on the board with one run in the second inning but in the bottom of the same inning, Ethan Emile legged out a double followed by Matt Collett's single up the middle. Then Ben Mulchinock bounced one past the short stop for a single, driving in Ethan for what would be the Eagles only run. And it would stay tied 1-1 for seven more innings!
Great defence kept the Eagles in the game. Andy Weir at third base, charged a nasty grounder in the fourth and scooped it up to keep the Spurs at bay. Ben Mulchinock in right field caught a fly ball over his shoulder, glove outstretched, running away (see picture above) preventing a certain extra base hit. Between the two teams, only one error was committed.
Back and forth, both teams shut each other down. The Black Eagles had their chances. Three times they had runners in scoring position to go ahead, but in the end the Spurs outlasted the boys from Victoria. An excellent team lost to another excellent team. We will meet again.
