By CJ Siewert

After the first month of the 2015 season the St. Peter amateur baseball club has managed to put together a 5-2 overall record and is 4-0 in the River Valley League.

The Saints were scheduled to have played 12 games by now, but rainouts and various conflicts resulted in five cancelled games.

May 15: Chaska 5, St. Peter 1

Class B powerhouse Chaska scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth for a 5-1 victory at Veterans Field.

Jordan Wilmes scored the lone run for the Saints on an RBI single by Tyler Stoffel. The Saints collected eights hits, led by Ty Kaus (2-4, BB), Ryan Kapsner (2-5), Wilmes (2-4, R) and Stoffel (2-3, RBI).

Jeff Wenner suffered the loss after five innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

May 20: St. Peter 12, Prior Lake 3

The bats came alive in the second game of the season with a 12-3 win over Class B Prior Lake at Veterans Field. The Saints had 17 hits, led by Billy Hanson (4-4, 4 R, 2 BB) and Shea Roehrkasse (4-5, R, 2 RBI).

Jeff Wenner earned the win after five innings. He allowed one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

May 31: St. Peter 3, Arlington 2

In the RVL opener, the Saints edged by Arlington 3-2 at Arlington Ballpark.

St. Peter won the pitcher’s duel with the combo of Jesse Anderson and Matt Lewis. Anderson started and earned the win after five innings. He didn’t allow an earned run and gave up just two hits. Lewis pitched the final four innings for the save. He struck out five and gave up two hits also.

Roehrkasse led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run.

June 2: New Ulm Brewers 11, St. Peter 4

The New Ulm Brewers proved they haven’t missed a step from last season’s Class C state runner up finish, beating the Saints 11-4 at Johnson Park.

The Brewers scored three in the first inning and held that lead until the Saints scored two in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2. But the wheels feel off in the bottom of the fourth with four Brewer runs, followed by four more runs in the fifth to take an 11-2 lead.

Kaus led the Saints at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Jeff Wenner suffered the loss after five innings. He allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits and two walks.

June 5: St. Peter 2, Fairfax 1

St. Peter erased a one-run deficit in the seventh inning to tie the game and then scored the eventual game-winning run in the eighth to hold on to a 2-1 victory at Memorial Field.

Anderson pitched seven solid innings to earn the win. The lone Fairfax run was unearned as Anderson gave up six hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Kaus (2-3, 2 BB, RBI) and Stoffel (2-4) led the Saints at the plate.

June 7: St. Peter 10, Belle Plaine 1

The pitching duo of Jeremy Braun and Lewis held visiting Belle Plaine to one run on five hits en route to a 10-1 St. Peter victory.

Braun pitched the first three innings and allowed the lone run. Lewis then finished the game and earned the win after six innings of work. He gave up four hits with 10 strikeouts.

Six Saints recorded multiple hits – Hanson (2-5, 2 R, RBI), Seth Wenner (2-4, R, RBI), Jayme Munsterman (2-4, R, 2 RBI), Stoffel (2-3, R, 2 BB, 2 RBI), Kapsner (2-4, R, HBP) and Ryan Wenner (2-5, R).

June 14: St. Peter 4, New Ulm Kaiserhoff 1

Two runs in the first inning was all the Saints needed against the visiting Kaiserhoff as the home team cruised to a 4-1 win.

Anderson improved his record to 3-0 after pitching five innings. Anderson hasn’t allowed an earned run in 20 innings pitched this season.

Jeff Wenner pitched three innings and Grant Nelsen closed out the ninth.

Kapsner led the Saints at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.

The local nine have a busy week this week, hosting RVL Central leading Jordan Tuesday, followed by a home game Wednesday against the Mankato Twins and then they travel to Arlington and Gaylord Saturday and Sunday to defend their title at the High Life Invite.
