For the second time in three years, a Maple Ridge product has been selected in the early rounds of the Major League Baseball Amateur (Rule 4) Draft. Devon Stewart, a right-handed pitcher who played his minor baseball in Ridge Meadows, was selected in the 9th round (274th overall) by the Cleveland Indians.
Devon played his minor baseball in Ridge Meadows, and was part of the Midget AAA Royals for two seasons (2008 & 2009). He was a key member of the 2009 club that won a Provincial and Western Canada Championship, and was also selected as a member of Team BC that won a bronze medal at the National Championships in New Brunswick that same year.
After finishing his two seasons with the Royals on a high note, Stewart moved on to play for the Langley Blaze of the Premier Baseball League. Devon was a key part of the 2011 team that won the PBL Championship. Following that season, Devon received a scholarship to play baseball at Canisius University in Buffalo, New York.
While at Canisius, Devon was a member of two MAAC Championship teams. In addition, he was named a Freshman All-American and the MAAC Pitcher of the Year in his first season at the school. He was also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team in multiple seasons.
Devon has now officially signed a contract with Cleveland, and will begin his professional career as a member of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Class A - Short Season). The Ridge Meadows Royals would like to congratulate Devon, his parents Don and Lori, and the rest of his family for this achievement.
