Playing with only one or two players on the bench for most the weekend, the St. Peter town team was unable to defend its title at the High Life Invite, hosted by Arlington and Gaylord, getting shutout in both of its losses as well as winning by the 10-run rule.
In the opening round matchup against Elrosa Saturday morning in Gaylord, the local nine ran into an ace pitcher and were shutout 7-0.
St. Peter collected seven hits, led by Ty Kaus (2-4), Billy Hanson (2-3) and Tyler Stoffel (2-2, BB, SB).
Jeremy Braun suffered the complete game loss on the mound. Braun allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Later in the afternoon the Saints were paired against Heron Lake in the consolation bracket played at Arlington. St. Peter made quick work of the Lakers, winning 12-2 in five innings due to the tournament’s 10-run rule (all tournament games are seven innings). In each of the first three innings the Saints plated four runs and batted through the lineup. The 2-3-4-5 hitters in the St. Peter lineup recorded three runs apiece – Ryan Kapsner (2-2, 2 BB), Shea Roehrkasse (4-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Seth Wenner (1-4, BB, 3B, RBI) and Hanson (0-1, 3 BB, SB, RBI).
Kaus earned the five-inning win, allowing one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
St. Peter was then bumped out of the consolation bracket Sunday afternoon with a 9-0 loss to Chanhassen. The Saints only managed to tally two hits in the game – one by Hanson and the other by Stoffel.
Jesse Anderson suffered his first loss of the season in the complete game outing. Anderson allowed nine earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
St. Peter (6-6 overall) returns to River Valley League play today, hosting Gaylord at 7:30 p.m. The Saints are 4-1 in the league standings, while the Islanders are 2-0.
