The 6-foot-5 Brown also is AL.com’s Coastal Alabama Boys Basketball Player of the Year. McGill-Toolen’s Phillip Murphy, who led the Yellow Jackets to their first Class 7A boys basketball title, is Coach of the Year. Both will be honored Thursday at the AL.com/Mobile Sports Hall of Fame Winter Banquet at the Ashbury Hotel and Suites in Mobile.
“During the season, when Tevin was accomplishing all this, we were going full speed so we didn’t have a lot of time to stop and think about it,” Robertson said. “But now that we can sit back and look at it, it’s pretty impressive.”
Brown also had 99 steals and 48 blocked shots in helping Fairhope to a 22-8 record. The Pirates lost to McGill-Toolen in the South Regional final.
Robertson said the most impressive thing about the season Brown put together was that he was always the center of attention for every opponent. It rarely mattered.
“Whenever we needed a play whether it was on offense or defense, Tevin was willing to step up and take the shot or guard someone,” Robertson said. “As the best player on the team and kind of the leader of the program, he is exactly the type of guy you want in that position.
“It’s weird to say, but you want a guy who is not afraid to miss a shot to win the game. You have to have the courage to take it in the first place. I hope that is an example to our younger guys. I also hope they see and emulate the work Tevin puts on in the weight room and in the offseason.”
Surprisingly, Brown has yet to receive his first college offer, though Robertson said interest has picked up. He said Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, South Alabama, Troy and “schools all up and down the Southeast” have called.
“When Tevin starts playing in the summer circuit and coaches can get out there and evaluate, I think the offers will come,” he said. “I think when the first one comes, there will be a bombardment. Good things will happen for Tevin.”
Murphy, who finished his ninth year as McGill’s coach, had a hectic – but rewarding – week during the state finals. His wife, Brandi, gave birth to their fourth child – and first girl – that Monday. He left for Birmingham two days later where he watched his team knock off defending champ Hoover in the state semifinals in double overtime and then No. 1 Central-Phenix City in the title game.
“I feel like I’m in the twilight zone,” Murphy said after the title game. “I’m still spinning. I haven’t slowed down literally in the last month. I haven’t stopped to breath or hardly eat or sleep. I’m in awe. It’s been busy. I’m ready to get some rest. I’m looking forward to spending some time at home with the family and re-establishing a little family life and getting to know my little girl.”
