REBELS GET BLOWN OUT IN BEAUMONT

A rough first inning for the Rebels paved the way for the Beaumont Angels to shutout Ryley 8-0 on Thursday night at Four Seasons Park. The loss is the first of the season for the Rebels.

Win - Kirk Smith     Loss - Corey Epp

The Rebels would spot the Angels six runs in the bottom of the first inning in what ended up being right handed Corey Epp's shortest outing of his career. Veteran pitcher and future Powerline Baseball League Hall of Famer Donnie Oslund commented that Epp was throwing well, but misses were ending up belt high in the zone which caused a lot of problems for Epp. The first five Angels who stepped up to the plate would reach via four singles and a walk before Beaumont right fielder Liam Gregor and first baseman Matt Berube would hit back to back doubles to end Epp's night. The line on Epp was not pretty as he would surrender six earned runs in only a third of an inning before giving way to reliever Shawn Pilgaard.

Pilgaard would hold the hot hitting Angels offense at bay for the final five and two thirds innings allowing only a pair of runs after an error to short stop Barry Truss. The Angels could only scatter five singles off of Pilgaard and only managing to have one runner reach scoring position from the third inning on.

With Pilgaard holding the Angels off the scoresheet, the Rebels offense needed a kick start to make it a game. Unfortunately the offense could not muster much against Powerline Baseball League All Star pitcher Kirk Smith scratching only five hits together against the hard throwing right hander. With a pair of rainouts for the Rebels leading up to Thursday's game in Beaumont, the offense looked rusty not having faced pitching since Tuesday May 17.

Ryley's hitters were hard pressed to come up with any offense against Smith, despite the power pitcher only have two strikeouts through the first four innings of work. The back breaker for the Rebels offensively came in the fourth inning when with one out newcomer Mark Walker would line out to the Angels second baseman Marc Villeneuve who would quickly go to second base to catch Rebels first baseman Kevin Reinholt for the bang bang double play. Smith would then proceed to collect eight strikeouts over the next three innings with the only out not via the strikeout coming on a force out in the sixth inning. Smith would finish his night with a complete game shutout win against the Rebels collecting ten strikeouts while walking only four hitters. Left fielder Kris Kushnerick would narrowly end Smith's shutout in the seventh inning with two out on a deep drive to centre field. Unfortunately deep centre in Beaumont is one of the deepest parts of any field in the PBL and the ball would short hop the fence for a stand up double. Smith would end the game by striking out the next batter for his tenth of the night.

The Rebels will now head back to the Ryley Ballpark to take on the Rosalind Athletics, a match up of the 2015 PBL Semi-Final series between the two teams. The Athletics would go on to win that series 2-1 with both wins coming in Ryley. Should the recent stretch of wet weather stay away on Tuesday, first pitch will be at 7:00pm.
