St. Peter town team on a roll

The St. Peter amateur baseball club won its fourth consecutive River Valley League game Sunday at Jordan, beating the top team in the league and No. 8-ranked Class C team in the state by a 4-2 decision. The Saints also defeated RVL foes Fairfax, New Ulm, and Henderson in convincing fashion. St. Peter beat Henderson 6-1 on June 12, followed by a 15-0 win at Fairfax on June 21, and a 10-2 victory over the Kaiserhoff on June 24.
The Saints are now 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the RVL, which is good for third place in the league standings out of nine teams. St. Peter hosts Arlington at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 28) in a battle for second place, followed by a 7:30 p.m. Thursday game at Class B Victoria before taking the July 4th holiday weekend off.
June 26: St. Peter 4, Jordan 2
Newcomer Luke Schwarz posted his best pitching performance of the season as he held the No. 8-ranked team in the state to just four hits in a complete game outing. The win marked the first regular season victory over Jordan after 15 years of play in the RVL and second overall as the Saints defeated the Brewers in the 2014 Region 6C championship.
St. Peter took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Billy Hanson singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sam Wenner. The Saints gained a 3-0 advantage in the fourth as Jayme Munsterman and Wenner singled, and both crossed home on another single by Jovan Rodriquez.
Schwarz had his no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning as the Brewers scored two runs on a double, two singles, and a hit-by-pitch to make it a one-run game. But the Saints responded in the sixth as Ryan Kapsner reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on an error, and scored on another single by Rodriguez to make it a 4-2 lead.
Schwarz did the rest as he settled in and faced the minimum over the last four innings. Schwarz allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Rodriquez (2-4, 3 RBI, BB), Seth Wenner (2-4, BB), and Sam Wenner (2-3, SAC, RBI, 2B) led the Saints at the plate.
June 24: St. Peter 10, New Ulm Kaiserhoff 2
The Saints erased a first inning one-run deficit en route to an eight-run victory against the Kaiserhoff. St. Peter scored two runs in the second and never trailed the rest of the game. New Ulm tied it in the third, but the Saints scored three runs in the fourth, fourth in the sixth, and one in the eighth for the decisive victory.
Jeff Wenner picked up the victory on the mound after six innings of work. Wenner allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out four. The Saints collected 16 hits, led by Rodriguez (3-5, 2 SB, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Hanson (3-4, 2B).
June 21: St. Peter 15, Fairfax 0 (7 innings)
St. Peter recorded its largest win of the season in a 15-0 route at Fairfax. First-year pitcher Cullen Bruce pitched the seven-inning complete game, allowing just four hits in his first pitching appearance with the Saints.
The Saints held on to a slim 2-0 lead after four innings, but the bats came alive with five runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and six in the seventh. St. Peter amassed 16 hits.
Jordan Wilmes led the team at the plate, going 5-for-6 with two runs, a double, and five RBI.
June 12: St. Peter 6, Henderson 1
After trailing 1-0 in the first inning, St. Peter answered by tying the game in the third and taking the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs. The Saints then added two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth for the 6-1 victory.
Alex Klug started on the mound and went two innings. Jeremy Braun came in relief and tossed four innings to pick up the win. Braun didn’t allow a hit and struck out two. Sam Wenner led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a two runs and a stolen base.
