The St. Peter town team continued its winning ways with a pair of victories against River Valley League foes. The Saints trounced Le Sueur 13-2 in eight innings on Friday in Le Sueur followed by a 7-5 victory over Gaylord at Veterans Field on Sunday. St. Peter’s game against Jordan on Tuesday was rained out. The two wins move the Saints to 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the RVL, having won seven straight league games and nine of their last 10 overall. As of Sunday night, St. Peter is a half-game out of first place in the RVL.
July 8: St. Peter 13, Le Sueur 2 (8 inn.)
Le Sueur took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and held on to that advantage until the Saints exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning. The breakout fifth frame featured four hits, four walks, a hit-by-pitch, 13 plate appearances, and a Le Sueur fielding error. The Saints added a run in the sixth, another in the seventh, and three more in the eighth.
Jeff Wenner (3-0) earned the win of the mound after five innings of work. He allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Jesse Anderson tossed the final three frames without allow a run, while striking out five.
Jovan Rodriquez led the team at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs, a walk, two doubles, and two RBI.
July 10: St. Peter 7, Gaylord 5
The local nine controlled the pace of play from the onset as they scored three runs in the first inning and another in the second. Luke Schwarz (3-3) pitched seven scoreless innings and left the game with a 6-0 lead. Schwarz allowed only two hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Gaylord made it interesting at the end of the game, scoring two runs in the eighth inning off reliever Jeremy Braun and three in the ninth off Alex Klug, but Jesse Anderson entered the game with the bases loaded and one out, and was able to get out of the jam to end the threat and the game.
Shea Roehrkasse (2-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI), Rodriguez (2-5, R, 2B, 2 RBI), Jeff Menk (2-5, R, RBI), and Jayme Munsterman (2-4, RBI) led the Saints at the plate.
St. Peter hosts Belle Plaine at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 12) and then travels to New Ulm at 7:30 Friday. The Saints wrap up the weekend with a 6 p.m. Sunday home game against Henderson.
