PITTSBURGH- University of Pittsburgh softball player Carly Thea was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All Mid-Atlantic Region second-team, as announced by the NFCA on Thursday. This marks the first All-Region selection in Pitt Softball history.
"As our first ever All-Regional player we couldn't be more proud of Carly and her accomplishments this year," head coach Holly Aprile said. "This is a tremendous honor for Carly and for our entire program."
Fresh off of an All-ACC second team selection, Thea adds another award to her standout junior season.
Thea led the way for Pitt with a .388 batting average, the 6th best mark in the ACC. Her team-leading .636 slugging percentage also ranked 10th in the conference. Thea also led the Panthers in hits (47), doubles (9), total bases (77) and on-base percentage (.471). She set a career high with seven home runs on the year and put together an on-base streak of 19 consecutive games which was a career-best and a season-high for any Panther. She also rounded out the year with 21 RBI, 25 runs scored and 16 walks.
"She has worked very hard in all facets of her game and she really emerged as a true offensive leader this season," said Aprile.
Thea started her junior campaign on the right foot, hitting the game-winning homer against Cal State Bakersfield in the first game of the season, and followed with a two-hit, four-RBI game during the second game of the year. She finished the year just as strong, hitting .400 during ACC play, and leading the team with 26 hits and five doubles to go along with four homers during conference games.
Thea concluded the season with seven multi-hit games, and five multi-RBI games.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third teams selected for each region. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2014 NFCA Division I All-America teams.
The 2014 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 28, via NFCA.org.
