Hot Potato Costs Supers a Victory

Posted May 13, 2017

On Friday May 12 the Langenburg Indians came to Al Sapieha Field for the Supers home opener. The weather was a bit chilly but the Supers defence was stone cold as five costly errors turned what likely would have been a victory into a disheartening 6-4 loss.

Things started off well as the Supers scored two runs in the bottom of the first as Travis Mentanko and Kholton Shewchuk each drove in a run. Unfortunately the tide began to turn after an error led to a Langenburg run in the third, followed by two errors in the fourth inning which led to four Indians runs.

The Supers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within one run, but once again the defence let the team down once again in the top of the seventh as another run scored as a result of an error.

Trailing by two heading into the final inning, the Supers first two hitters reached base via the walk to start a potentially promising inning. Evan Rostotski would then drill a line drive into center field. As center fielder Tyler Hartung dove, the ball went in and out of his glove. Unfortunately once the baserunners realized the ball had not been caught, the Indians were able to quickly throw the ball into the infield and tag out two Supers runners to effectively kill the rally. It was just not meant to be for the Supers on this night.

Colby Parachoniak pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs (only one earned) on four hits while striking out three while taking the loss. Logan Parachoniak and Kholton Shewchuk would each come in relief to finish out the game.

Offensively the Supers had five hits with Greg Andreychuk getting two doubles and two runs scored. Logan Parachoniak had an rbi double, while Travis Mentanko had a single, an rbi and a run scored. Kholton Shewchuk continued his hot hitting with a single and two sac flies. Evan Rostotski scored the other run.

Matt Poier and Nick Carlson had two hits each for Langenburg, Dane Kobylko was the winning pitcher, while Aaron Haas got the save. With the loss the Supers record falls to 2-1 on the season. The next game will be Wednesday, May 17 in Yorkton at 8PM vs the Yankees at Jubilee Park.
