The St. Peter amateur baseball team played a couple exhibition games on the road last week, losing 11-9 to Winsted on Sunday, followed by a 9-1 loss at Chanhassen on Thursday.
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Winsted, but allowed the Wildcats to score a total of 11 runs in the second through fifth innings. St. Peter and its depleted lineup that featured zero substitution options and a 60-year old third baseman, closed the gap in the ninth frame with six runs on five hits and two walks, but was unable to complete the comeback.
Jayme Munsterman led the team at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a walk. Jesse Anderson suffered the loss on the mound.
The local nine had a tough challenge against the No. 4-ranked Class B team in the state on Thursday. St. Peter trailed 4-0 before scoring its first run in the seventh as Nate Wenner walked and later scored on an error. The Redbirds answered in the eighth as the Saints were forced to rely on position players as pitchers. Regular second baseman Jordan Wilmes made his first career appearance on the mound and the home team took advantage with five runs.
Alex Hoehn hit 2-for-3 with walk. Jeremy Braun took the loss after three innings of work.
