Down the Homestretch
Posted July 4, 2018
With just one week remaining in the 2018 SWBL season, the playoff picture is still very much up in the air. In the South, what we know for certain is that the Boissevain Centennials (12-1) will finish 1st. The Deloraine Royals (6-7) and the Hartney Hoppers (5-8) have clinched playoff spots, though 2nd and 3rd place has yet to be determined. Hartney holds the tie-breaker between the two clubs after sweeping the season series. The final playoff spot comes down to the Wawanesa Brewers (3-9) and the Souris Cardinals (2-10). Both teams have a pair of games during the final week.
In the North, we have a dog fight for 1st place and a birth in provincials. The Rivers Comets (10-2) and the Hamiota Red Sox (10-2) have battled atop the division all year long, with both teams holding serve in Week 6 by going undefeated. And as luck would have it, Rivers travels to Hamiota on the final day of the season to likely determine top spot. The Oak River Dodgers (7-5) will also play a big part in determining the division champion, as they play both the Red Sox and Comets in the year's final week. If tied, the teams would need a 1-game playoff to determine first place.
The aforementioned Dodgers continue to battle for the final two playoff spots with the Virden Oilers (7-7) and the Reston Rockets (5-8). Oak River and Virden are in the driver's seat, both needing just one win or one Reston loss to clinch. The Elkhorn Expos (3-11) have been eliminated from playoff contention.
