GAYLORD, Minn. - The St. Peter town team’s seven-game win streak came to an end Sunday, losing 8-3 at Gaylord to conclude the regular season. The Saints enter Region 6C playoffs as the River Valley League’s No. 4 seed with a 9-5 record (11-9 overall) and will face the 13/60 league’s No. 5 seed Eagle Lake at 4 p.m. Saturday in Waterville. The winner will match up against the winner of 13/60 No. 1 Waterville and RVL No. 8 Arlington on Sunday at the high seed.
On Sunday at Gaylord, Andy Regner got his first mound start of the season and surrendered six runs (four earned) in two innings to suffer the loss. Jeremey Braun then pitched five innings of quality relief, allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits with three strikeouts. Sam Wenner tossed a scoreless eighth.
The Saints scored their first run in the fourth as Austin Pinke came home on a base hit by Billy Hanson. In the fifth, Shea Roehrkasse blasted a two-run homer over the left-center field fence, but that would be it for the Saints as they stranded 11 base runners.
Roehrkasse led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, walk, and two RBI.
Saturday’s playoff game will be the first meeting between St. Peter and Eagle Lake as the Expos are a new team this season. The Expos finished their 13/60 league schedule with a 7-9 record. The Region 6C bracket doubled in teams from last season as it formerly featured the eight teams from the RVL. It has now added the eight teams from the 13/60 to create a 16-team double-elimination bracket with the last three teams standing earning bids to the state tournament. St. Peter is looking for its fifth-straight state tourney appearance, which has never been done in the century-long history of the team.
