Royals hit the diamond

The Armena Royals made their way to Anniversary Park for spring training and, of course, a few hours of labour on the infield.

The team is much improved from last season with some additions of young and old talent.

Clark Banack is player-coaching the team with the help of a few others. The Royals have a spring training game against the NCABL’s Camrose Axemen on May 4 (Could be May 5, checking on, post a comment if you know). Game time is 7 p.m. in Camrose.

The Royals received new uniforms thanks to the Armena Rec Association and are hanging in there after a transition year in 2008. It appears the young squad could challenge for a playoff spot if they get out to a decent start.

The defending champion Bardo Athletics have also started their spring training with an indoor session at the Tofield Gym. Other teams will begin their annual warming up of the arms after the long winter. So far, six teams, Armena, Bardo, Camrose, Leduc, Ryley and Tofield are set to play this season.

There is a league meeting Monday, April 20, that should get a draft schedule and other items finalized heading into the end of April.
