Good Start Continues Against Athletics

The Milleteers exacted a small amount of revenge Wednesday night as they knocked off the defending PBL champions from Bardo, the same team that bounced them from the playoffs last year. The battle for first place was tightly contested all night.

As usual the Milleteers got strong pitching and defense as starter Steven Pahl had a perfect game going through four innings and still had a no hitter going into the sixth before he began to tire and the usually strong Bardo bats woke up. 
 
After a double got the inning started and a walk and a hit later had the Athletics threatening, Pahl had to dig into his bag of tricks and pickoff the runner on first with the old bush league move to wriggle out of the jam. 
 
He ended up only giving up two hits and finished with nine Ks. Closer Kevin Doyle came in to nail down the save, but he looked a little like BJ Ryan as he got two quick outs, then a bloop, a walk and a line drive later the tieing run was at third with the winning run at first. Kevin then got a little help from his brother Murray at first base as he knocked down a hot shot and flipped to his brother covering first to preserve the win.

Offensively the Milleteers were a bunch of Dominican hackers as usual as they failed to draw even one walk for the second time this season. Back to back doubles in the fourth inning scored a pair, and a clutch RBI single from veteran Shaw Brinkworth stood up as the winning run. A few rookie mistakes on the base paths killed some rallies, and it would be helpful if batters worked the count a little more and coaxed some walks, but the offense did just enough to win.

Tomorrow the Milleteers head to Camrose to take on the Roadrunners in a battle of the last undefeated teams with Greg Jackson getting the start for the key matchup.
