Milleteers continue winning ways

The Milleteers ran their winning streak to four games including the Road Runner tournament as they beat the Tofield Lakers tonight. The current winning streak has been fuelled by the offense as for the fourth game in a row the Milleteers have scored double digit runs. Tonight the Milleteers used a lot of bloops and infield singles to keep the line moving and even hit their first triple of the season as Dan Stephen hit a deep shot down the right field line that one hopped the fence.
On the mound the Milleteers saw a couple of debuts tonight as Karl Zimmer got his first start of the season after using his bat the night before to terrorize the Royals. He did his part as he went four strong innings with five strikeouts and the only two runs coming unearned. Then the Milleteers’ skinny rookie left hander Greg Zilkie towed the mound and looked solid as he went three scoreless innings and worked out of a couple of jams.
Defensively the Milleteers had an off night as they made an uncharacteristic four errors. Left fielder Kevin Doyle won the bizarre play of the night award as he tried to cut off an obvious double to the gap with a diving stab on a grounder, than he did a Johnny Mac move as he tumbled over and tried to flip the ball to the center fielder to cut down the runner at second only to see his toss miss the center fielder by about twenty feet. The first runner up for the bizarre play of the night had to go to the Tofield runner on first base, who with two outs, was seen diving back to first on a slow grounder to the second baseman to end the inning. The second runner up had to be Milleteers’ center fielder Brett Rikstad who could not decide whether to dive back head first or feet first on a pickoff attempt at first with a large lead late in the game, and was awkwardly called out.
The Milleteers get the rest of the week off for some well earned R and R and will be back at her with a big game against the defending champion Athletics on Wednesday, followed by the Riley Days tournament on the weekend.
