Reds Drop Rain Shortened Opener 5-2

The Dilworth Raildogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held on for a 5-2 victory over the Crookston Reds Amateur Baseball team in a rain-shortened game played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.

In the first inning, Dilworth’s Andrew Herain picked up a one-out single to center field and moved to second on a groundout.  Cole Honl reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Herain to score.  A walk was followed by back to back RBI singles by Josh Moser and Michael Hanson to put the Raildogs up 3-0.  “We didn’t have a good start in the first inning, unfortunately,” said Reds Co-Manager Rob Silvers.  “An error cost us three unearned runs and got us off on the wrong foot.  It was an unfortunate result with the feel-good story of Jackson Seibel battling back from cancer this offseason to get the start.”

The Raildogs extended the lead in the second inning.  A leadoff walk was followed by back to back flyouts to left before Herain hit an RBI triple to right center. An RBI single by Connor Robley pushed the lead to 5-0.  The Reds got a run back in the second when Blake Kawlewski singled to right center with one out.  Alex LaFrance reached on an error to put runners at first and second.  Alex Wolfe singled to right center to score Kawlewski to make it 5-1 with both runners advancing to second and third on the throw.  Back-to-back popouts ended the Reds threat.

In the fourth inning, Alex LaFrance singled with one out and after a popout to first for the second out he stole second.  Cody Magsam walked and Jacob Butcher ripped a one-hopper to second base that hit off the second baseman into center scoring LaFrance to make it 5-2.  The game was called in the top of the sixth with the Raildogs batting so the score reverts back to the end of the fifth.  “It was too bad we couldn’t get the full game in,” said Silvers.  “Last year we had 17 come-from-behind wins and I felt we were starting to gain some momentum as the game wore on. It’s a long season, and we feel like we’ve got a pretty good squad again this year.”

The Reds fall to 0-1 in the Red River League and will travel to Thief River Falls for a 4 p.m. game Sunday.  Dilworth improves to 1-0.
