Braves see off Tribe to hoist PL pennant in 58

The story of the season has to be the Indians. Unwanted by the old AL, unwanted by the TB, oblivion awaited or triple A ball. But seeing an opportunity the PL President decided to increase to 5 teams and gave them a chance. And what a chance it was. For a large swathe of the season it looked like they could take the Pennant and continually found ways to overcome the fragility of their bullpen. But for every fairy story there is a big bad wolf and the Braves played the part to a tee. Unloved by everyone outside Milwaukee for being effective rather than exciting we must remember that baseball efficiency is what wins the day.  Their pitching was nothing short of magnificent giving up only 22 hits and 12 runs in the series. Despite Frank Torre winning the batting title narrowly from Richie Ashburn whose bat was icicle cold from the All Star game onwards, and clinching the Golden Glove making zero errors and 290 put outs it was not enough to win MVP. That honour went to Rocky Colavito of the Indians who was the Mantle of the PL, and even pushed him close in several categories. Cy Young was a close run thing with voting going to seven different pitchers but Stu Miller was the most feared pitcher during the season and his league leading 1.51 era was enough to tip it his way.
