Danny Hennen, Mudhens shut out Hancock

Assistant Manager Beau Buysse found it ironic the Minneota Mudhens were playing “The Orphans”, on Father’s Day.

But he didn’t find it strange when pitcher Danny Hennen fashioned an eight-hit shutout, stranded 12 Hancock runners and held off the Orphans with the bases loaded and and one out for a 2-0 Mudhen victory Sunday at Hancock.

“That (the ninth) was about the only time he was in real trouble,” said Buysse. “Danny wanted to pitch the ninth inning,” said Manager Tyson Sonnenburg.”It was a very pressure-tested situation,” Sonnenburg added.

The Mudhens got their only two runs in the fifth inning as they, too, were battling a tough righthander, Collin Brown of Hancock.

Hennen and Austin DeVlaeminck started the rally with singles. BeauBuysse sacrificed them to second and third and a long fly by Jake Leighton brought Hennen home with the first run. DeVlaeminck scored  when catcher Austin Steege threw wild to third trying to pick off DeVlaeminck.

And that’s all the scoring there would be.

“Hancock hit some hard hit balls, but they were right at us,” said Sonnenburg. “They were a good scrappy team and they were putting the ball in play,” said Beau Buysse.

Leighton, Alex Pohlen and DeVlaeminck led the 10-hit Mudhen attack with two hits apiece.

The win ran the Mudhens record to 12-3 on the year and 6-0 in the Land O’Ducks League.
