Supers 2019 SESBL Champs!

For the first time since 2008, the Canora Supers have captured the Southeast Senior Baseball League title by defeating the Langenburg Legends in three straight games of the best of five final series.

Game 1: Canora Supers 14 Langenburg Legends 1 

On Monday July 29 game one took place at Al Sapieha Field in Canora. The Legends drew first blood in the top of the second inning, but from that point on it was all Supers in a 14-1 whitewash.

Kody Rock started on the hill and went the full seven innings to pick up the win. He allowed just one run on two hits with ten strikeouts

The offence was in peak form with five home runs, including two by Rock. Travis Mentanko, Phil Sobkow, and Sean Kolodziejski hit a home run each. The Legends intentionally walked Rock twice to get to Mentanko. The first time was successful as Mentanko was put out, but the second time around Mentanko made them pay with a grand slam. Rock also had four runs batted in. Evan Rostotski, Logan Parachoniak, Kholton Shewchuk and Ian Quewezance had one hit each.

The Legends made an uncharacteristic five errors in the field as it just wasn't their night.

Game 2: Canora Supers 13 at Langenburg Legends 7

The following evening the Supers travelled to Langenburg for game 2, and the hot bats carried on right from the beginning as Sean Kolodziejski deposited the first pitch of the game over the right center field fence. Three batters later Phil Sobkow hit a three run homer and the Supers never looked back in a convincing victory.

Travis Mentanko added to the air show as he hit a home run in his third consecutive playoff game, hitting a three run shot over the right field fence in the top of the second to extend the lead to 7-1. Langenburg made the game interesting in the bottom of the fourth by getting to within three runs as the score was 8-5 heading into the fifth. The Supers pushed two across in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Sean Kolodziejski had four hits, Logan Parachoniak and Kholton Shewchuk had three, while Travis Mentanko, Kody Rock, and Phil Sobkow each had two hits. Ian Quewezance and Jordan Evans had one hit apiece as well.

Kholton Shewchuk pitched the first four innings to record the win, while Derek Palagian tossed the final three to get the save. 

Once again the Legends made some costly mistakes as they made five errors in the field and a couple of baserunning miscues which rarely happens

Game 3: Canora Supers 10 Langenburg Legends 1: Thursday August 1 in Canora

With a 2-0 series lead the Supers were looking to close the series out by handing the ball to Kody Rock, and he did not disappoint as he threw the complete game once again in a 10-1 win. Rock allowed just one run on two hits with ten strikeouts in another masterpiece.

The game was sailing along until the bottom of the third when the Supers exploded for six runs highlighted by a Logan Parachoniak three run home run to give some much needed breathing room. 

Three more runs were scored in the fifth highlighted by Travis Mentanko's home run in his fourth consecutive game to put a cap on a dominant playoff streak. Phil Sobkow had a three game home run streak as well, while the team hit 13 in five playoff games which is truly remarkable.  

The Supers would like to thank Mike Spelay for another year of dedication as the public address announcer. He truly makes Supers games much more professional and a better overall experience.

A big thank you to Aaron Herriges and the Town of Canora for keeping the field in good shape throughout the season.

Another thank you is for Terry Wilson, coach of the 18U Canora Reds for providing us with players when our roster was short for several games. Clay Sleeva, Brendan Babichuk, Grady Wolkowski, Brendon Landstad, Jayden Heskin and Brody Harrison made appearances with the Supers this season and did well. The future is bright in Canora as Minor Baseballl is thriving.

The fan support this season was the best it has ever been. The crowds at games were the largest in decades. It is not cheap to run a team as in most years player fees take up most of the team expenses. In 2019 the support from the fans with the game day silver collection paid for the majority of the expenses. We can not thank everyone enough for your generosity and we will be hungry to come back next year to defend our title
