Sherwood Park won’t field 2nd (PBL) team

Hope of a seventh team came crashing down Tuesday night, when Sherwood Park Minor Baseball Association Director of Facilities in Sherwood Park, Rick Bourne, confirmed that the outside shot of a second Sherwood Park men’s baseball team would not be happening in 2010.

“I got word last night that the group that was thinking of coming is not so we will pass for this year and see if we can get it together for next year,” Bourne said.

This means the draft schedule could be finalized soon since there will be no seventh team.

However, the final issue to wrap up before the season begins is whether or not to join Baseball Alberta. The Armena Royals proposed the matter so they could secure umpire assigning from the Sherwood Park area. Some teams voiced concerns on the possible restrictions Baseball Alberta could impose on the league.

Ray Lehman and Jason Buzzell are investigating the matter further before the 2010 season begins.

If the league does not join Baseball Alberta, the league schedule may have to be tweaked to accommodate the umpire scheduling in the Camrose area once the Camrose Axemen schedule is released.

Opening day is May 18 with games taking place in Armena, Ryley and Tofield.
