Veteran Gets Promoted

Veteran Shawn Brinkworth has officially been promoted to assistant coach. Now in his third year with the team, Brinkworth was originally a reclamation project. The project now seems to be complete.

After being the premier baseball player in Millet growing up he hung up his cleats after helping to bring the 1996 Midget AA Provincial Championship to Wetaskiwin. He was originally seen as big addition to the team as seemingly every season that Shawn Brinkworth and Steven Pahl played on the same team success followed. The script did not originally go as planned, but after some hard work, it seems as though Brinky Time is back.

When he came to the Milleteers half way through their inaugural season Brinkworth was washed up and woefully out of shape. After hurting his elbow and pulling both his hamstrings in his first few outings he had to cut his season short. He showed some resiliency though as he came into 2009 in improved shape.

His innings were limited to keep him healthy and he rewarded the team with a sub 2.00 ERA and delivered the biggest hit in Milleteers history as he started the rally that started a seventh inning comeback in the first round of the playoffs that the Milleteers rode all the way to the PBL championship.

This off season he continued to get in shape as he shed a few more pounds and started throwing on his lunch breaks at work. So far this spring he has looked outstanding, and his enthusiasm is starting to rub off on the rest of the team.

“The veterans on this team all respect him for his past success and the young guys like him for his enthusiasm and love of the game. You can’t help but love baseball after hanging around Brinky” says manager Steven Pahl.

The combination of his knowledge and baseball skills make him a good fit as he is respected by the team and he has some good insight into the game to pass on.

It also lets Manager Steven Pahl focus more on being a pitching coach at practice, which he is more suited for. So far Brinkworth has embraced his increased role as his goal is winning championships, and if his past resume is any indication, the Milleteers should be in for a good 2010.
