Milleteers Come Up Short In Ryley Tournament Final

After winning their first game on Friday against Holden the Milleteers then hooked up with the Battle River League champs from Heisler. The Cardinals were a little shorthanded this week so they picked up a few guys from around the BRL, including former PBL All Star Steve Ofrim. Ofrim got the start for the Cardinals and held the Milleteers in check for the first few innings, but after they Milleteers got their base running blunders out of the way they managed to put up five runs on the big righthander.

On the other side of the ball Steven Pahl got the start for the Milleteers. He managed to shut out the Cardinals on the strength of eleven strikeouts and two double plays to help get the Milleteers into the A final.

In the final the Milleteers went up against the defending tournament champs, the Provost Combine Pilots. The last time the two teams met the Combine Pilots lit the Milleteers up as the pounded them 12-0 last year. This time was a closer game as the Combine Pilots triumphed
5-1.

The Milleteers left a ton of runners on and just could not get that clutch hit to bust it open. Defensively the Milleteers were solid again, but could not recover from a bad second inning that saw All Star Jon Anstey give up three runs. After the inning Anstey had to come out of the game with a shoulder strain, and will be re evaluated this week. Ryan Walker came in and pitched well as he gave the Milleteers a chance to win but they just could not string together any offense.

Despite the tough loss in the final it was a great tourney as the weather was awesome and the beer was cold. The rest of the tourney finished up as follows:

B Final: Camrose Axemen beat Cadogen Nighthawks

(The Axemen went through the tournament undefeated, but the Milleteers had a better runs for and against so they went to the A Final).

C Final: Heisler Cardinals beat Holden Blue Jays

(Holden beat the Ryley Rebels on Sunday in the C Semi Final for the right to play the Cardinals.
