9-run sixth sinks Royals

The Armena Royals looked like they were in position yet again to end their prolonged losing streak, but instead the Ryley Rebels in the end gave the Royals a second straight woopin’ courtesy some timely hits and unfortunate Royal errors.

Armena, like they had done less than a week ago against Bardo, took an early 7-4 lead after three and a half innings. A four-run fourth featuring a Troy Sharpe 2-RBI single put Armena in position to win their first game since May 25. Cody Sroka was keeping the Rebel offence in check with his junk and precision pitching.

But the Rebels charged back with a four-run fourth of their own, as Bryan Tavoroli launched a three-run blast to give them an 8-7 lead.

The Royals, who found holes and got on base on Rebel starter Corey Epp weren’t done yet. Brian Rademacher knocked in Jason Buzzell for a game-tying RBI, which seemed to setup a thrilling ending to a game that took more than 3 hours to complete.

But a two-run bomb by Ryley’s Kevin Reinholt followed by several errors by nearly half the Royal defence mounted a 9-run back-breaking finish and a 17-8 final that looked much worse on paper.

“Another tough loss, and you can’t really point to one thing. The game just got away from us,” said player-coach Jason Buzzell

The Royals now head to Tofield Thursday night to take on the Tofield Lakers.
