Rebels heating up at the right time

The Ryley Rebels picked up two wins this week, first over the Armena Royals, then a dramatic 4-3 win over the rival Bardo Athletics Thursday night at home.

Thursday night’s game was scheduled for Bardo, however rains over night pushed the game to Ryley as the teams chose to swap home games. The July 15 game scheduled for Ryley is now going to be played in Bardo.

The Rebels, who have now won six of their last seven games after starting the season 0-3, took over sole possession of second place with the win.

It didn’t come without some excitement though.

Down 3-1 in the seventh inning, Ryley All-Star Dylan Solberg launched a three-run walk-off shot to defeat their hated rivals 4-3. That sets up a rubber match for the season series for the July 15 game in Bardo after Bardo knocked off the Rebels 10-5 on opening night with the help of two Ken Braget bombs.

After starting 0-3, Ryley has righted the ship. Earlier in the season, player-coach Kevin Reinholt said things would have to change.

“We’re a bad team right now,” he said after dropping their second game of the season 12-3 at the hands of the Holden Blue Jays. “We can’t field and we can’t hit.”

The hitting has picked up, and with some of their solid athletes picking up things defensively, they could be a threat come playoff time.
