Peterson says he’ll retire at season’s end

Scott Peterson still has it. But he hasn’t much left in what seemed like a never-empty gas tank.

The aging right hander who has been a part of four PBL championships with two separate franchises said this will be his final regular season.

“This is it, this is my last season,” Peterson said as he warmed up for his second All-Star start and seventh midsummer classic appearance. “My arm is hurting quite a bit after I throw and it might be time just to do some tournaments here and there if I get asked.”

Peterson, whose son and daughter are reaching their prime years of sports and activities, hinted that is a big reason for the semi-retirement. It’s cut his games played down a lot, but for the first time this season the Milleteers needed him so he bit the bullet and played baseball instead.

“It’s tough, Blaze had his last baseball game of the season and I missed it to play (that night),” he said. “He was like, ‘You’re not coming?'”

He will go out on a high note, and gun for one more championship in 2010. He’s yet to give up an earned run in 20 IP this season and only five hits.

“I don’t know how he does it,” said former student of Peterson’s in Hay Lakes Kyle Ellis. “He’s 40 years old and he’s throwing 2-hit shutouts, it’s ridiculous.”

Peterson of course pitched well in the all-star game, giving up just one run in four innings pitched. His last all-star game during his last season a fitting send-off for a career that seemed to be over 11 years ago before Armena came calling.

A decade and thousands of pitches later, it’s finally time to call it quits.

“I guess if the PBL had a hall of fame it’d be hard to not put him in,” said former teammate Jason Buzzell. “He’s our Greg Maddux of this league.

“The biggest question is, would he go in as a Milleteer or a Royal/Axemen?”
