Milleteers Come Up Short In Semi Finals Of Axemen Tournament

The Milleteers came up a little short against the eventual tournament champions in the semi finals of the Axemen Tournament on Sunday. The Edmonton Prospects Academy, a travel ball team made up of midget age players from all over the country proved to be a little too much for the rest of the field.

Steven Pahl got the start for the Milleteers and he kept the talented youngsters off the board for the first three innings before some defensive miscues in the fourth allowed the Prospects to get a few across. Pahl was forced to leave after four innings due to blister problems on his pitching hand.

Hard throwing closer Jon Anstey came in and looked good early as he fanned the first two batters before his control eluded him as he walked the next two and also hit a batter before the Prospects got back to back hits to take the lead for good.

Offensively the Milleteers got their chances but only got one big clutch hit, a Brad Engel double in the fourth to give the Milleteers a two run lead. I guess they could take solace in the fact that they were the only team in the tournament to score a run on the Prospects as they mercied the Axemen 8-0 in their opener and clipped the powerhouse Parkland White Sox 2-0 in the final.

The White Sox got there by destroying the Calgary Diamondbacks 27-0 and mercying the Provost Combine Pilots 11-2. In the B Final the Camrose Axemen downed the Edmonton Warriors 7-2.

Next up for the Milleteers will be a couple tilts this week versus the top teams in the PBL to settle the early leader in the standings as they take on the Ryley Rebels Wednesday in Leduc and the travel to Bardo to take on the Athletics on Thursday.
